Three area high school sports programs were among 30 in the state honored this week as Scholar-Athlete Schools of Distinction.
Cazenovia, Manlius Pebble Hill and Living Word Academy received the honor by having all of its varsity teams qualify for the state’s scholar-athlete team award during their respective sports seasons.
Cazenovia has 24 varsity sports teams, MPH has 15 and Living Word has four.
The awards are handed out by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
In order to earn scholar-athlete recognition, three-quarters of a particular team’s roster must average a 90 or higher grade point average for that season.
In addition, eight other programs from Section III earned School of Excellence honors by having 75 percent of their varsity teams earn scholar-athlete team awards during the year.
Those schools are: Christian Brothers Academy, Cortland, East Syracuse Minoa, Jamesville-DeWitt, Lowville, New Hartford, Oswego and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.
