MPH Students Impress at Central New York Science & Engineering Fair
The 39th annual Central New York Science & Engineering Fair was held Sunday, March 25, 2018 at the SRC Arena on the Onondaga Community College campus. Students from Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Jefferson, Madison, Onondaga, Oswego, Tioga, and Tompkins counties participated and competed for $195,000 in cash and scholarship prizes.
MPH was represented by nine fifth graders, 28 middle school students, and senior Marina Cousins, who also presented her work at a recent American Chemical Society national meeting.
We are pleased to announce that Marina Cousins received the top honor of the day, an all-expense paid trip to the International Science & Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, PA May 13 – 18! Her other recognitions included High Honors, the Terra Science and Education Award, the SUNY Oswego Genius Olympiad Award (she advances to the Genius Olympiad on June 13, 2018), the Office of Naval Research – Naval Science Award and the U.S. Air Force Award. Marina is the seventh MPH student who has received this top honor since 2012.
MPH students had an impressive showing overall at the competition, with nearly 75% of our students receiving awards yesterday. According to Science Department Chair Sue Foster, a judge at the competition commented, “You guys at MPH are doing a great deal right. MPH students are poised, engaging, and find joy explaining their work.”
These students have spent months working on their research and have presented several times to a wide range of audiences. The enthusiasm they demonstrate for their projects, the confidence they possess when presenting, and the joy they experience in their accomplishments are sure signs of “The MPH Effect” in action. Congratulations to all of our students scientists.
